Hi I am Alf and will be your guide dog through this
Roberts family tree. To aid navigation similar areas of the family are grouped on a chart.
All pages have a Blue Home Button and Green Buttons with a Chart Reference for navigating to associated family members.
Green Boxes link to pictures and Yellow Information or additional picture boxes. A Blue Names Button
is also available on each page to find a specific family alphabetically.
This can also navigate to a specific chart number. Multiple named family charts are also indicated by date.
All comments will be welcome to paul@cmmi.co.uk.
Use the back button to return to a page. With no
more of a woof lets go back in time. Or go straight to Tanswell or Hallows/Saul.
The Roberts family of which I am a key member
has probably originated from William Roberts of Hereford. It is
almost certain they descended from John Roberts of Deerhurst
born in 1515. (Map). (Detail
Map) The first definitive records are of a John
Roberts living at Corse, North of Gloucester. It is
known that during the 17th 18th and 19th centuries the Roberts lived in
the Woolridge, Harpbury and the house in Ashleworth area North of
Gloucester.
It is here that Thomas Roberts married Anne Surman who's family lived at
the Great House, West of Hasfield.
(Identified from grave stone). This is a Tudor fronted building now open
through National Heritage. The Surman family would seem to have
been very influential in Gloucestershire.
In 1924 the Roberts and Surman's Family were again reunited.
(Gertrude Surman).
Gertrude had related stores that the Roberts were the wealthy side of the family.
This was probably in part due to the previous association to the other side of the
Surman family. One part of the Surman family supposedly supporting
King Richard in the crusades and the other King John. The Surman's
at Hasfield having supported King John taking the wealth while Richard
was off fighting. The Surman's were extensively farmers based in the Coombe Hill area north of Cheltenham.
The Surmans' give an impression of a very friendly and close family.
Tom Roberts emigrated to Australia before the first world
war and staked land claims in Tamworth, New South Wales. Fighting
as a digger at Ypers in 1917, Tom was injured and returned
to Blighty for convalescence. Tom returned to Australia for discharge and then returned back to England
where he met Gertrude and they were married in 1924. Tom and Gertrude Moved to Australia in 1948
to farm on the land fenced of before the war. They were joined by son Bob and Peg.
Son John who was in the Navy and daughter Margaret
who' husband lived in Finchley North London stayed in England.
John Roberts married Jessica
Tanswell in 1948. (Tanswell History
Page) On leaving the Navy in 1956 John joined the National Gas
Turbine Establishment at Farnborough where the family of son Paul
and daughter Carole lived on the Pyestock Estate. First at 9
Melrose Avenue (Now demolished) and then 12 Conway
Drive. John and Jessie moved to Fleet in 1968 where they live
to day.
In 1974 Paul married Lesley Hallows.
(Hallows History Page) They rented
accommodation at Farnborough for one year and then moved to Hale
North of Farnham. They lived for ten years at Bricksbury Cottage (Now
demolished) where they had their four children.
Then moved to 7 Newmans Court until in November 1997 moving to their
present house. Paul started work for the Ministry of Defence in
1968. In 1990 joined Thorn EMI at Feltham.
I came into the household in August 1999 and have since then been the number
one top dog.
